Program Mission
The National Beef Cattle Genetic Evaluation Center (NCBCGE) coordinates China’s centralized genetic evaluation system for beef cattle. The program converts performance records, pedigree information, and genomic data from core farms into standardized Estimated Breeding Values (EBV) and Genomic Estimated Breeding Values (GEBV), enabling transparent sire and dam selection for commercial and seedstock producers.
Evaluation Scale
As of the latest release cycle (July 2026), the national database integrates phenotypic and pedigree records from more than 860 registered farms. The system currently holds evaluation records for approximately 128,450 bulls and 356,200 cows, supported by over 2.1 million progeny performance records. Since the program’s expanded rollout, 48 official evaluation batches have been published, with new releases issued twice annually.
Trait models cover growth, carcass-related indicators, maternal traits, and composite indices such as CBI and GCBI, providing a consistent basis for comparing animals within and across breeds.
Breed & Geographic Coverage
The evaluation system covers 12 major beef breeds under national registration, including Huaxi, Simmental, Angus, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, alongside other commercially important populations. Participating farms are distributed across 31 provincial-level regions, linking national core farms, provincial breeding stations, and qualified performance-testing units into a unified national reference population.
Key Indicators & Data Quality
Published results emphasize traits with direct economic impact: birth weight, weaning and yearling weights, feedlot gain, dressing percentage, carcass weight, calving ease, and multi-trait composite indices. DNA verification and pedigree auditing are applied for elite sires promoted through national showcase programs.
